The idea that modern architecture was visually destitute was usually based on poor examples, like the Avenue of the Americas in midtown Manhattan. But other modern cityscapes -- like the condominium towers on Collins Avenue north of the Art Deco District in Miami Beach or the high-rise social housing on the outskirts of Barcelona -- present a different picture. Buildings in these areas offer patterns of remarkable variety through the simple manipulation of windows, mullions, spandrels, balconies and the random patterns of reflections, curtains and interior lighting. A street full of googie buildings can add up to a remarkably rich environment. A few contemporary architects, like Rem Koolhaas and Architectonica, have clearly picked up on this idea.
