...The idea that modern architecture
was visually destitute was usually based on poor examples, like the
Avenue of the Americas in midtown Manhattan. But other modern cityscapes
-- like the condominium towers on Collins Avenue north of the Art Deco
District in Miami Beach or the high-rise social housing on the outskirts
of Barcelona -- present a different picture. Buildings in these areas
offer patterns of remarkable variety through the simple manipulation of
windows, mullions, spandrels, balconies and the random patterns of
reflections, curtains and interior lighting. A street full of googie
buildings can add up to a remarkably rich environment. A few
contemporary architects, like Rem Koolhaas and Architectonica, have
clearly picked up on this idea.
