GOOGIE SIGNS

Sometimes a building may not be very significant, but the sign in front of it is. The following are some excellent examples of Space Age roadside signs, mostly culled from the strip shopping centers of Orange County, California.

Al's Party Pantry
State College Blvd., Anaheim, CA
Removed 2000

Al's, and most of the surrounding area, has been raised to make way for a new Walgreen's Drugstore. However, the sign was rescued and is now part of the collection at the Museum of Neon Art.

H. Salt / Liquor Store
333 E. 17th Street, Costa Mesa, CA

This sign has obviously undergone some changes over the years and it's interesting to see how many businesses can be advertised in so small a space. Note the barber pole painted near the base.

Anaheim Drive-In
S. Lemon St., Anaheim, CA

Sal Garcia

This was part of the Aladdin chain of theaters. It was later used for the Anaheim Swap Meet. Also see a close-up of the lettering.

Northgate Market
W. La Palma Ave., Anaheim, CA

The soaring support structure for this sign is far more impressive than the sign itself. It shoots skyward like a rocket, pointing the way to the Space Age.
Next door, you can see a googie Baskin-Robbins' Ice Cream shop.

Wong's Restaurant
10656 Westminster Blvd., Garden Grove, CA

Half rocket gantry, half pagoda -- This sign is a good example of googie-flavored exotica. The support beam has various geometric shapes cut out of it. Three brightly colored shapes make up the sign itself. Did this escape from the Asian section of Disneyland's "Small World?"

Angel Motel
Chapman Ave., Orange, CA

Another interesting sign on a business that is probably best avoided. This style of sign really pre-dates googie, but you can see some of the elements starting to appear.

Gimme Gas
Location Unknown

A sign for one of those "Gas, Food, Eats" places along the highway. The potential for juvenile humor is obvious. The sputnik on top is of a different design than the Anaheim "Satellite Shopland" sign. Can you offer more info?

Holiday Inn
Locations across the United States
Image from unknown source

The original Holiday Inn signs were one of the more famous and widespread signs to use googie elements.

Cozy Corner
Harbor Blvd., Anaheim, CA

The arrow shape and the lettering are stylistic holdovers from the 1940s, but the starburst brings it into the Space Age. The building itself is quite non-descript.

La Palma Chicken Pie Shop
928 N. Euclid Ave., Anaheim, CA

There's some argument as to whether this building is really googie. Whatever your view, stopping here for lunch will really take you back to the fifties. Neither the interior nor the exterior have changed much over the decades. The adjoining strip mall has a slight tiki theme.
